On July 24th at Frontier Park in Show Low, there were dancing dogs, high flying disc catching dogs, beauty pageant contestant dogs and doggies just behaving well. Some furry friends were beginners in the world of agility (like
Maverick, at left, with friend Debbie from Java Deli) and others were seasoned veterans (like Gypsy, above, who loves having fun with her owner, Debbie Maerker of First Dog Sports). If you and your furry friend missed this event, fear not. The White Mountains are full of opportunities for fun with dog sports. …

It’s August and that means it’s time once again for the spirited return of Happy Tails Food Festival, Raffle & Auction. This is the most important fundraising party of the year for the Humane Society of the White Mountains. Simply put, all the homeless and abused animals count on this community to help rescue them that day, Saturday, August 21st. They bet all their dog and kitty chips on it. Most of the shelters in our county and surrounding counties are closing, and all strays from Apache and …

I am pleased to announce that we are sponsoring the 2nd Annual Back Pack & School Supply drive for the residents of the White Mountain SAFE House (www.wmsafehouse.org)!

I am asking that each of …

Here is a shot from the recent Pioneer Days Celebration in Snowflake-Taylor. This little face-painted cutie is how I will remember this event. I stopped in late Friday afternoon to find a carnival in paradise. It was as blissful as any of the recent Hidden Meadows Ranch commercials (You know the ones where everyone is smiling and eating their vegetables.): Lush green grass, upbeat music (provided by the Country Aces), petting zoos, train rides and other really neat stuff everywhere. The good folks of Eurofresh (a major sponsor …

There are a lot of wonderful causes out there, each really just as important as the next. Everyone has their favorites as well as their reasons for ‘giving back.’ Whether it is fighting the possible extinction of an obscure species in some deep wild land or just helping put food on the table for a family, there are so many ways you can help save the world. ‘Saving the world’ is more than a cliché when you know that you are truly making a difference.
If you would like to …

I have always thought that hunting often gets a bad wrap in modern times. Personally, I’ve never really hunted and at times tend to be a little more vegetarian than the average bear, but really… how can a tradition that was once one of the few ways of eating be ‘all bad.’ In a time before Wal-mart or many other choices, I bet few people complained about hunting (especially if they were hungry). A good hunter respects what he/she hunts and understands the importance of habitat conservation, hunting …

Fire is one of the basic needs in life. A source for keeping warm, cooking, purifying water, giving oneself a sense of calm in the woods, and so much more. Sunday, August 22nd from 10 am – 4 pm, wilderness survival expert Mike Bochnia will take participants on a journey that will explore fire-making from it’s most primitive start; from literally rubbing two sticks together, to learning how to make simple tools that make friction fire making easier. This will not only be a journey of fire-making, but a sharing …
