Letter to the Editor: A Thank You
August 27th-the 28th was The Eleventh Annual Highlands Garden Conference held at the Mazatzal Casino in Payson. The theme this year was Sustainable Gardening, based on the concept that our gardening practices can produce food for and beauty in our homes and communities today without compromising the resources needed for future generations.
The event started on Friday August 27 with Sustainability Demonstration Tours featuring local practitioners’ of water harvesting, Square-foot gardening, Xeriscape and Firewise landscaping. The Conference itself began on Saturday August 28, with keynote speakers Greg Peterson, founder of the Urban Farm in Phoenix, and acclaimed author and filmmaker David Wann of the PBS series Affluenza and Sustaining America’s Agriculture, and author of The Zen of Gardening, Simple Prosperity, and Superbia! 31 Ways to Create Sustainable Neighborhoods. Expert speakers at morning and afternoon breakout sessions explored other facets of sustainable gardening, including Movable Hoophouses with Ed Page, Songbird Gardens with Tice Supplee, Wonderful Worms with Fred Jimenez and Lauren Cathcart, Farmer’s Markets with Valerie McCaffrey, Community Gardens with Rebekah Doyle, Gravity-Fed Irrigation with Ed Martin, Vegetables for Sustainable Gardens with Cayci Vuksanovich, Tinctures & Salves Using Wild Herbs with Leilah Breitler, and Home Orchard Success with Terry Mikel and Jeff Schalau.
Thanks to all of the Master Gardeners and volunteers who helped make this event a success! Karen Burke, Lauren Catchcart, Reta Cruse, Beverly Emerson, John Emerson, Fred Jimenez, Forrest Hammer, Annette Kahler, Annette Monthey, Audrey Morris, Jerry Morris, Pearl Nancarrow, Pam Perling, Jeannie Putnam, Barabara Richards, Manuel Romero, Pat Romero, Sabrina Tuttle, Jerry Ullum , Cayci Vuksanovich, Doris Weakly, Ron Wilson, Robert Zache, and Renee Zeising. It could not have happened without all of your hard work! You are the heart and soul that keeps us moving forward.
Also special thanks to the local residents in Payson who opened up their homes and businesses and spoke for the Friday Demonstration Tours: Glenn McCombs with Plant Fair Nursery, Rodd and Brenda Ross, Bruce Wales, Dean and Darlene Younkers, Morris and Phyllis Brown, and Mike Brandt. Your generosity and hospitality were greatly appreciated.

Hi-when I was at another company we got your magazine regularly in the mail, can that be sent to my new compan? Driggs Title Agency PO Box 3990,Pinetop,Az. 85935.
I want to ask my boss about advertising in it.So need to show it to him. I don’t know where to pick up a copy.
Thanks
Paid for a 2 year subscription only recieved a years worth of magazines. I live in Holbrook and no one here carries the magazine.
The High Country Xeriscape Council of Arizona is planning what many gardeners are planning this time oif year. The demonstration garden at Gila Community College is in need of stong soil ammendments. We will be supplementing the soil with mulch and building up areas that need soil to plant. Without solid infrastructure plants cannot thrive and grow as they should. After that phase is complete we will begin planting many colorful xeric plants. The project will take some time but should have a great result. When in Payson stop by the garden at the college and see a work in progress and pick up some helpful brochures.
Hi Amie,
I have another article to submit to you, but I need your e-mail address. As you might recall, I submitted an article regarding safe landscape for pets some time ago.
Presently I have an article on “Three Sisters Companion Gardening.” This is something I believe your readers might be interested in as it deals with a traditional Native American way of gardening that folks can do in small spaces. It puts a whole new meaning to square foot gardening.
I can be reached at 928-587-1719 should you need to talk with me.
Thanks,
Michelle Denton
On April 15, 2011, I spoke and did a book signing at the assisted living center in Wagon Wheel.Your photography took a photo of me with one of my former students, Gerrie Nozie of Whiteriver. I lived in the White Mountains for over 17 years before moving to Mesa. You spoke of doing a feature story on me or having me submit one. We did not have long to talk, so I am unsure about how to submit a press release to the The Maverick Magazine. I have written four books, two of which I promoted on April 15: White Woman in a Red Man’s World (my memoir), and In Spite of Cancer, a compilation of coping stories, poems, and artwork by 72 cancer patients and their caregivers. All proceeds from that book go the University of Arizona Cancer Research Center.
I will be happy to give you a press release with some details about my books and why I chose to write them. I have had several speaking engagements, including one in February to the Arizona Historical Society.I will be speaking at the Historical Museum in Show Low on Aug. 18. Please give me some instructions on what and how I should submit my press release. Thank You. Georgia Lucas, http://www.georgialucasbooks.wordpress.com.

We really enjoyed the June 2011 edition and shared it with many at juniper ridge resort. But we can’t find the issue for July or august.
Hi Aimee:
I with an organization called Truth in Love Ministry. We are doing some advertising in the area and would like to run a full-color, full-page ad in an upcoming issue of Maverick magazine. Barbara Bruce suggested that I contact you.
If we are in the December issue, our ads express love by providing an alternative to the stress and burdens of life. Calling it the “Gift of Worthiness”, we are placing an ad in WMI, that reaches out with love and respect to women who feel completely over-whelmed.
Please let me know if you have any available ad space. You can contact me at dave@tilm.org or give me a call at my home office at 208-855-2307.
Thank you,
Dave Malnes

Good day,
I am a 21 year old woman… I did find your details on Vega (branding & innovation)website…
I have been struggling to find people who are willing to give bursaries to students who wants to go to Vega branding & innovation…
My story starts with when I got out of matric in 2008…
I went to university in 2009 , went well but after the first year I had to come back because financially my parents couldn’t afford it anymore…
My parents tried to get back up their feet again but slowly & surely got there… I had to go look for a job but with only matric & one year university it was quite difficult…
Last year December I had applied to Vega & went for an interview & gave in a portfolio… A week later I got accepted to go ( If you phone Werner he could tell you)… I was really excited to go because in long hard time , I discovered my passion & it is photography… I have such a huge passion for weddings & wedding photography , I LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Well as the year 2010 went on my mother’s estate agency fell through the floor & my dad was still struggling with his business…
I had no way possible to go anymore , which completely killed me on the inside , I felt like giving up but I’m still trying… Guys this is my passion , I really really absolutely love photography … You guys probably know what it feels like to get up in the morning & realize that you absolutely love your job… I want to be able to feel the same…
School is really expensive & so are the equipment & I am seriously looking for help…
I have literally tried everything , 94.7 wishlist , numerous companies, different bursary funds (to no avail) , banks (which my parents do not qualify for anymore)
Please help
Kind regards,

I am sad that the rabbit edition never made it online. How do you pick and choose which editions to put online or not? I sent print editions of the rabbit mag to many people. I was looking forward to sharing the online edition with my audience. Very sad indeed. I asked the person in the article and she indicates she has no idea why her story was never published. She was sad as well. It is sad. It’s a disappointment! Inconsistencies are tragic in your type of business. We look forward to something and it crashes when we are let down. I stopped checking back here. I am drifting away, in all honesty, I am truly saddened.
Why can’t I see the rabbit edition online? We have been using the print editions for our livestock class. We need to print more.
Hei Amie, how are you? We met at Honda casino art reception at the launching of the WM Indian Arts festival. Anyway, I’ve been pretty busy w/ shows and art work I forgot to get back with you about sometbings in regards to something. Maybe you remember. If not, it is okay. I hope your summer is going well. Mine is going, going but w/ a little pressure from the show datelines. You take care and have a great summer, Johnson
Hey Amie,
Don’t know if anyone has told you lately, but you and Travis are doing such a fantastic job with your magazine. Don’t know that I could find one that is better. Keep up the great work. I know how hard it is.
